Tennessee Direct Admissions: A New Pilot Program Helping Families Plan for College

The Tennessee Higher Education Commission is leading a new effort to help students and families plan for college more simply and affordably. This effort is known as Tennessee Direct Admissions, a pilot program that is part of a statewide research project. While the program is still in its early phase, the goal is clear: reduce barriers, lower costs, and help more Tennessee students see college as a real option after high school.

What is Tennessee Direct Admissions?

Tennessee Direct Admissions is a pilot program that automatically admits eligible high school seniors to certain colleges and technical schools. Students do not have to complete traditional college applications or pay application fees. Instead, the program uses information schools already have, such as grades and records, to help match students with schools that may be a good fit.

Who is Included Right Now?

Not every student or high school is part of the pilot yet. Currently, approximately 255 randomly selected high schools across Tennessee are included. More than 45,000 students may receive letters letting them know they have already been admitted to one or more colleges. Because this is in a research phase, the program is being studied to learn what works best, with the hope that it can reach more students statewide in the future.

How Financial Aid Fits in

About half of the students who receive a direct admissions letter will also see information about state and institutional financial aid that may be available to them. The study is designed to learn whether sharing clear financial aid details along with college acceptance letters helps more students enroll in college. Researchers will compare students who receive both admissions and financial aid information, students who receive admissions information only, and students who do not receive a letter at all.

Why This Program Matters

The college application process can feel confusing and stressful for many families. Application fees can also add up quickly when students apply to several schools. Tennessee Direct Admissions helps remove these barriers by simplifying the process and reducing costs. By showing students early that college is possible, families can plan with more confidence and less pressure.

What Should Families Do Next?

Families at participating schools should keep an eye out for official letters and connect with their school counselor to help understand what the letters mean and what to do next. Students should also complete the FAFSA, which is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Families can learn more and apply at studentaid.gov. Completing the FAFSA helps students qualify for grants, scholarships, and other financial aid.

Families can also find more details, frequently asked questions, and a list of participating high schools at collegefortn.org. This website explains what Tennessee Direct Admissions is, what it aims to accomplish, and what families should expect next.

Even if your school is not part of the pilot yet, this program shows how Tennessee is working to make college more accessible for all families. Staying informed today can help families prepare for tomorrow.
