Henry County Truancy Program

Identify strategies to intervene with chronic truant students, address the root causes of truancy, and to stop the youth's progression from truancy into more serious behaviors in order to prevent them from being placed in state custody for truancy. We serve students in grades Kindergarten through the 12th grades. We meet with students, parents, and faculty to advise, encourage, and help the students to be successful.

Eligibility Requirements

Students are taken into the program based on their attendance at school. We meet the requirements of the law (TCA 49-6-3007 c,d, e(1, 2), f, g). Once they have three days of unexcused absence we contact the home as a truancy prevention measure. We watch every week by computer analysis what their attendance has been, and once they reach five unexcused days the parents are called in to answer according to law in a Truancy Board Meeting. This measure is to give families an opportunity to provide adequate excuse to get them off the truancy list before they are reported to the Sheriff according to Tennessee law. If court proceedings are necessary, we go with the family to court and keep watch over the attendance for the rest of the year.
