What Families Need to Know about Measles

Most parents have heard of measles, but many have never seen it. Even so, it is still around and can spread quickly. Measles can be prevented. Learning how it spreads and how to protect your family is one of the best ways to stay healthy.

Measles is a serious illness caused by a virus. It spreads very easily through the air when someone coughs or sneezes. Anyone can catch measles just by being in the same room, even up to two hours after someone who is sick has left.

Symptoms usually begin one to two weeks after exposure. Early signs include a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Within a few days, tiny white spots may appear inside the mouth. These are called Koplik spots and are a classic sign of measles. Soon after, a red rash develops. The rash often starts on the face and then spreads down the body. Measles can lead to serious problems like ear infections, pneumonia, and in rare cases, swelling of the brain.

The best way to protect your family is with the MMR vaccine. MMR stands for measles, mumps, and rubella. Doctors recommend two doses for children. Most people who get both doses are protected for life.

Best Practices for Families
