Make Every Day a No Tobacco Day

Did you know that tobacco can hurt your body, even if you don't smoke it yourself? Every year, on May 31st, World No Tobacco Day reminds us how important it is to stay tobacco-free to live a healthy life.

Tobacco can cause serious health problems like cancer, heart disease, and breathing issues. Even breathing secondhand smoke is dangerous. That's why it's important for families to talk about the dangers of tobacco and how to stay safe.

The Tennessee Tobacco Use and Prevention Control Program shares ways to help stop using tobacco and prevent young people from starting. You can learn more about community and youth engagement here:  tn.gov/health.

If someone in your family wants to quit smoking or using tobacco, they can call the Tennessee QuitLine at 800-QUIT-NOW or visit tnquitline.com. It's free, and they offer help over the phone, online, or by text message.

The CDC also has tips for families, including ways to make your home smoke-free: cdc.gov/tobacco.

The American Lung Association has programs just for Tennessee to help schools and communities fight tobacco use. You can learn more at lung.org/tn.

Here are a few tips for talking with your child or teen about tobacco:

  • Start early: Even young kids understand the idea of healthy and unhealthy choices.
  • Be clear and honest: Simply share facts, like how tobacco can hurt their lungs or make it hard to play sports.
  • Listen and stay calm: If they’re curious or have seen someone vaping or smoking, ask what they think.
  • Set a good example: Kids notice what adults do. Staying tobacco-free yourself sends a strong message.

Choosing to be tobacco-free helps everyone—kids, parents, and even pets! On this World No Tobacco Day, talk with your family about staying healthy, and let’s make every day a tobacco-free day!
