Preparing Tennessee Students and Youth with Disabilities to Achieve Their Career Goals

If you have a child with a disability who is between 14 and 21 years old, Tennessee has programs to help them get ready for life after high school. These programs are free and are offered through the Tennessee Department of Human Services’ Division of Rehabilitation Services.

One of the programs, Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS), helps students learn about jobs, build job skills, and plan for their future careers. Services include:

  • Job exploration counseling
  • Work-based learning
  • Postsecondary counseling
  • Workplace readiness
  • Self-advocacy

Pre-ETS helps to break cycles of unemployment for individuals with disabilities and connect students and families with vocational rehabilitation (VR) services at an earlier age to allow for seamless transition from high school to postsecondary training and employment.

Another program, called the Transition School to Work (TSW) program, aims to give students a seamless transition from high school to post-high school career development and/or employment. These experiences can help students feel more confident and ready for employment in their adult life.

These programs also support families in big ways. When young adolescents learn skills, explore jobs, and gain confidence, they are better prepared for the future. This can give families peace of mind. Parents and caregivers feel more hopeful knowing their child is building independence. These programs also open doors to new opportunities, including jobs, education, and community life. By working together with schools and the Division of Rehabilitation Services, families become part of the planning process and feel supported every step of the way.
