The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) of 2004 was designed to help families and educators provide better services to children with disabilities. The Tennessee Department of Education, Division of Special Education (TDE/DSE), and the Office of General Counsel provide a wide range of information and guidance to both schools and parents regarding the IDEA.

Office for Civil Rights
The mission of the Office for Civil Rights is to ensure equal access to education and to promote educational excellence through vigorous enforcement of civil rights. The OCR also provides training and technical assistance to local and state educational agencies throughout Tennessee, working together with its partners to prevent and address discrimination.
